5 ways to protect your business on Facebook
It's no secret that small businesses are the lifeblood of the New Zealand economy and our communities. And we know that a growing number of these small businesses are using Facebook to connect with their customers and grow their business. In fact, in New Zealand 80% of people on Facebook are connected to an SMB, and around the world more than 40 million small businesses have a Facebook Page.
We've all read the headlines and gasped when we see that a business's Facebook Page has been hacked. You've probably thought — please let this never happen to me. For small business owners, the security of your Facebook Page depends on the security of your personal account and – just as importantly – the accounts of the other people who administer your Page.
Here are five simple ways you can quickly take action now to protect your business page. And make sure the other Page administrators you work with do the same: 1. Create clear rules about the number of people who can manage your Page
The more managers you have on your Page, the higher the risk of a compromise. 2. Assign the correct role based on what each Page manager's job requires: Admin, Editor, Moderator, Advertiser, or Analyst Click here for details on the different types of access granted for each role. 3. Remove employees as Page managers if they leave your business To manage your Roles, go to your Page, Click on Settings, and go to Page Roles. Remove former employees by clicking the X beside their name, and then click Save Changes. 4. Enable Login Approvals on any Facebook accounts that can manage your Page Login Approvals provides additional security by requiring you to enter a specific code when logging into your account form an unrecognized device. The code is sent to your mobile device. For more information click here. 5. Secure your mobile devices Facebook uses mobile phones for authentication, which means securing your mobile phone is an important part of keeping your Page secure. You can secure your mobile device by using security features already available on your phone including codes, PINs, and passwords. And if your Page is hacked, it may mean that your personal account or the account of someone who works on your Page was hacked. If your personal account was hacked, we can help you secure it. If you think someone else who works on your Page was hacked, please tell them to go to the Hacked Accounts section of the Help Centre to get help.
