Hands-on review: Lenovo MiiX 700 Tablet - the best of all worlds

Mon, 5th Sep 2016
FYI, this story is more than a year old

For me it seems to be feast or famine, and recently I've been fortunate to review a range of tablets. The Lenovo MiiX 700 is the latest one  and the specifications suggest it's a goody. With an Intel® Core M7 processor, touch screen and up to 8GB of RAM, I'm expecting a feature-filled model. The included stylus suggests I'll be able to do a lot with this little machine. It also comes with a range of connections, with HDMI, USB 3 and USB 2 making it very connectible.

The build of this tablet reflects the thought and engineering that has gone into every aspect, from the "watchband" hinge that looks very stylish, to the receptive touch screen and it's well-designed keyboard and trackpad. Following other models, the keyboard is easily detachable and the MiiX switches easily from tablet to laptop mode.

As soon as I started up the tablet I could tell that the screen would boast very good graphics. My first stop was YouTube and I was impressed with the very good sound for a tablet, accompanied by crisp and clear pictures. I'm impressed. Even more impressive is the range of software I have to play with. My next stop (after downloading Chrome of course) was to play with the stylus with the writing and art demo software provided. The stylus was very natural and easy to use, even for a lefty like me. Lenovo's boast of an authentic handwriting experience would seem to be accurate. Equally impressive were the keyboard and track pad which had a nice solid feel and were as good as any laptops when it came to ease of use.

The sound and graphics quality on this tablet are outstanding. For the style-conscious professional on the move, you will find this suave little machine an extension of your artistic talents. I was easily able to connect the stylus to a spare port when I wasn't using it. While I am no artist, I appreciated the note-taking ability of the Lenovo. Sometimes I find it easier to write this way, and to refer back to my notes later when typing. Designers, students and professionals on the go will appreciate being able to scribble notes to refer back to when they return to their offices and residences.

If like me you need to connect quickly in a variety of locations, the Lenovo makes it easy. I was on-line within seconds of remembering where I hid my connection codes, and was surfing the Internet milliseconds later. I was impressed with just how quickly pages loaded, and did I mention the quality of video playback? For a moment I thought I was on my retina display on my fruity computer.

As I mentioned in a previous review, choosing a laptop or a tablet is a subjective thing, and also it's governed by price. If you compare this to other tablets, you will see differences across the board, from finish to graphics and price. The Lenovo is a definite step up, and a must-look-at for the professional on the go.
