DP World has appointed Jason Varsamidis Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of its Asia Pacific region, effective immediately.

He will oversee the company's ports, terminals and logistics businesses across 22 Asia Pacific geographies, where DP World employs more than 12,000 people. The regional operation includes 16 ports and terminals as well as broader supply chain services.

The appointment is a promotion for an executive who has spent nearly three decades with the business and its predecessor, P&O Ports. He joined in 1997 and most recently served as Chief Financial Officer for DP World Asia Pacific, a role he had held since 2020.

In that position, he worked on regional strategy, investment planning and business performance. Earlier, he spent seven years as Chief Financial Officer of DP World Australia.

Across his career, Varsamidis has overseen mergers and acquisitions, infrastructure projects and business turnaround programmes. In his new role, he will lead regional strategy and operations, with a focus on supply chains and expanding the group's logistics activities in Asia Pacific.

DP World said it would announce separate arrangements for the regional Chief Financial Officer role in due course.

Regional scale

Asia Pacific is a significant part of DP World's international network. Globally, the company operates across six continents and employs more than 125,000 people. The Asia Pacific division is a major regional platform for its port and logistics operations.

The business in the region spans both maritime infrastructure and inland logistics services. That mix reflects the broader direction of major trade and transport groups, which have increasingly sought to combine port assets with supply chain operations as customers look for fewer handovers across freight networks.

Varsamidis takes on the regional leadership role after several years in senior finance positions within the company. His background in investment and business performance points to continuity in the management of a division the group has identified as an important area for growth.

Yuvraj Narayan, Group Chief Executive Officer of DP World, said: "Jason is a highly respected leader with a deep understanding of our business and the markets in which we operate. His track record and commercial acumen make him well placed to lead Asia Pacific, one of our key growth engines. His appointment provides continuity for the business and keeps us firmly focused on our strategic priorities, our customers and our people."

Internal succession

The move also underlines DP World's preference for internal succession in a senior regional post. By selecting an executive already familiar with the company's assets, investment agenda and operating model, the group avoids a broader external search at a time when global trade operators continue to face shifts in demand, supply chain disruption and cost pressure.

His experience at both regional and country level gives him exposure to different parts of the company's network, including financial management, capital allocation and large-scale operations in Australia and the wider Asia Pacific market.

For customers and partners in the region, the leadership change is likely to be watched for signs of how DP World intends to balance its port operations with its logistics activities. The company has steadily broadened its presence beyond traditional terminal assets, reflecting a wider industry effort to build more integrated transport and distribution businesses.

Varsamidis set out his priorities following the appointment: "I'm honoured to lead DP World in Asia Pacific. We have a strong business, talented people and real opportunities across this region. I'll work closely with our leadership team and colleagues to maintain momentum, deliver for our customers and partners, and keep advancing our strategic priorities."
