How NZ workers can double holiday breaks with 2026 leave hacks

Fri, 21st Nov 2025

Analysis from job marketplace ZEIL indicates that New Zealand employees may be able to maximise their annual leave in 2026, with the calendar providing several opportunities to secure long breaks using minimal leave days.

Easter opportunity

Easter in 2026 presents one of the best windows for extended leave.

Good Friday is set for 3 April and Easter Monday for 6 April, creating a natural span of four consecutive days off. ZEIL's research shows that taking annual leave from Monday 30 March through Friday 10 April would grant workers a total of sixteen days away from work for the use of eight annual leave days, due to the inclusion of two weekends and the Easter public holidays.

Such an alignment is uncommon and may lead to increased competition for leave during this period among employees.

Anzac alignment

A second opportunity arises later in April. In 2026, Anzac Day falls on a Saturday, with the public holiday observed on Monday 27 April. For those able to add annual leave between Easter Monday and Friday 24 April, the result would be another block of extended time off, which can roll straight into the Anzac long weekend.

This sequence offers the possibility for New Zealanders to plan either one prolonged holiday or two significant breaks within a single month, subject to individual leave balances and workplace approval.

Calendar highlights

Besides the two main April opportunities, several other dates on the 2026 calendar allow for the extension of weekends. Notable public holidays on Fridays or Mondays include Waitangi Day (6 February), Matariki (10 July), King's Birthday (1 June), and Labour Day (26 October). The usual end-of-year Christmas and Boxing Day period also supports longer breaks by adding minimal annual leave days around the public holidays.

Wellbeing impact

The broader context is significant for workers facing ongoing cost pressures, increased workloads, and burnout. Advocates suggest that strategic leave planning now plays a role in supporting wellbeing. Research consistently shows the benefits of extended time off, including improved focus, decision-making, and resilience on return to the workplace. In addition, teams benefit from greater predictability as staff schedules are planned earlier.

Accessibility challenges

While many may seek to take advantage of the 2026 calendar, not all employees have equal access to leave during public holiday periods. Many in essential or customer-facing roles may find these times among their busiest, and rostering requirements can make taking leave in April difficult for some sectors.

"This is a golden window that does not come around often. If you want this break, get in early because plenty of other New Zealanders will be eyeing it up too," said Caitlin Langlands, Marketing Manager, ZEIL.
