Kiwi app designed to ease family stress outpaces Tinder, Hinge

Fri, 5th Sep 2025

A home admin app developed by a New Zealand mother has surpassed Tinder and Hinge in the New Zealand Apple App Store Lifestyle rankings.

Personal Admin Manager, known as PAM, reached number two in the category, also outperforming popular platforms such as Pinterest and Google Home, reflecting a growing demand among families for solutions to manage daily household logistics.

Household Organisation

The app was created in response to the mounting administrative responsibilities faced by families, especially mothers. According to figures cited by PAM, 90% of mothers are the primary coordinators of family administration, and 66% say they are very or extremely stressed by it. These pressures are felt through tasks such as responding to school emails, managing children's swimming gear, tracking birthday parties, and preparing for costume days.

PAM is designed to address these specific challenges by offering a family-focused administrative platform. The app originated from the personal experiences of Nicole Retter, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, who says her own struggles in balancing family life and work after the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for such a tool.

Retter shares that, after the pandemic, she managed the schedules of two preschool children and supported an injured husband while working in a new marketing role. She found herself frequently overwhelmed by missed events and logistical errors, and discovered that others were experiencing similar issues.

"There are 101 project management tools for businesses," says Retter. "But nothing purpose-built for the real project managers – parents. PAM does the thinking for you, and makes the invisible mental load visible – so it can finally be shared," says Nicole Retter – Co-Founder and CEO of PAM.

Functional Features

PAM leverages AI technology to interpret various communications, such as emails, images, and even physical invites, automating their conversion into reminders, events, and actionable items that can be delegated to different family members.

Retter explains the purpose of this approach as providing transparency in family organisation, allowing responsibility for tasks to be more evenly divided across households.

"That visibility is key. By turning invisible tasks into tangible entries, PAM transforms conversations about who's doing what from emotional to factual – making it easier to rebalance the load, loop in partners, whānau, or paid help, and build a more sustainable support network," explains Retter, adding that "It's more than just a digital organiser – PAM is a quiet revolution in how families operate."

Growth and Impact

The app was soft launched in February, and as of now has over 6,500 users, with 75% of them discovering the service through word of mouth. Retter notes that over a quarter of users have seen family administration stress reduced by 70–90% since adopting the app.

She says, "We've had users go from being the ones who turned up to school without the togs," says Retter, "to being the parent everyone else checks with to see what's coming up."

Workplace Equality

The broader implications of better managing home administration also relate to workplace equality and the gender pay gap, according to Retter.

"Women deserve to enjoy both career and motherhood – not just survive them," says Retter. "The gender pay gap won't close if we ignore the unpaid work happening behind the scenes in homes everywhere."

PAM continues to grow and is preparing to expand its reach beyond New Zealand. Its first funding round is nearing completion as the company considers international markets.

Retter reflects on the journey, saying, "What started as a personal solution has become a movement and we're excited to bring more parents onboard, lighten the load and prove that technology can make home life fairer, calmer and more joyful."
