Kiwis favour cryptocurrency for long-term investing in 2025

Today

A recent survey conducted by Binance New Zealand has shed light on the investment preferences of Kiwis, revealing a marked interest in digital assets as a long-term investment strategy.

The survey, which involved 316 respondents from New Zealand, found that 70% of participants consider cryptocurrency the most promising asset for wealth growth in 2025.

In contrast, traditional investments such as stocks and real estate lagged behind, with only 12% and 6% of respondents respectively expressing confidence in these assets.

The increased interest in digital assets like cryptocurrency is potentially influenced by recent recognitions of Bitcoin's value, having reached a market capitalisation exceeding USD $2 trillion, placing it among the world's largest assets.

James Quinn-Kumar, Director of Community Engagement at Binance Australia and New Zealand, commented, "As investors continue to explore new avenues for wealth creation, the survey suggests cryptocurrency is proving to be a key contender. Our data shows us that digital assets are an important consideration for Kiwi investors and their portfolios."

The survey dispels the notion that cryptocurrencies are predominantly used for short-term speculative gains, as 60% of those surveyed indicated a preference for long-term holding strategies, often referred to in the digital asset community as "HODLing."

Furthermore, 18% of respondents consider digital assets integral to their retirement planning.

Quinn-Kumar observed, "There are certain aspects of the digital asset space that are more about chasing trends, such as memecoins, but it's interesting to see Kiwi respondents adopting a more long-term strategy, potentially favouring more blue chip assets like Bitcoin."

He further remarked, "The user survey indicates that investors are moving beyond short-term trading and viewing crypto as a long-term buy and hold asset."

"With nearly one in five respondents agreeing that crypto plays a role in their retirement planning, at Binance, we see this as a strong sign of its growing legitimacy as a mature investment."

Despite the inherent volatility and ongoing debates surrounding regulatory frameworks, a significant 96% of respondents intend to continue investing in digital assets this year, with 67% expressing a bullish or very bullish outlook on the market's potential performance in 2025.

"This level of confidence from respondents suggests that investors see cryptocurrency as a resilient asset class," highlighted Quinn-Kumar.

"Even with market volatility and regulatory developments, Kiwis appear optimistic about the future of digital assets and their role in a diversified investment strategy."

These findings emphasise New Zealand's growing participation in the digital asset marketplace, with Binance New Zealand dedicated to supporting financial literacy and facilitating informed investment choices within the region.
