More phone buyers choose Android
Google’s Android is gobbling up BlackBerry’s share of the smartphone market, according to a new report from the Nielsen Company. Android captured 27% of the new smartphone market in the US in the second quarter of this year – a leap from just six percent in the last quarter of 2009. BlackBerry’s share declined from 45 to 33%. Android also surpassed the iPhone in second-quarter sales (the iPhone was steady on 23%), but Apple’s flagship product remains the phone of choice, with 89% of those questioned saying they planned to buy the new iPhone 4. While BlackBerry’s manufacturer, RIM, is widely expected to introduce a new operating system soon, at least one trade publication has suggested the only way to protect its market share would be to put out a BlackBerry capable of running on Android.
