Social enterprise offers South Auckland mums flexible employment

Mon, 10th Jul 2017
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Eco-friendly wrap company Munch is working with a team of South Auckland mums who are in need of part-time employment.

It's currently employed 11 South Auckland mums and two Wellington mums.

Munch offers them part-time work that can be completed in their own homes.

It's implemented the traditional 'outwork model' through the use of new technologies to empower those who need a hand up.

The work provided by Munch enables them to contribute financially to their families and lift their self-esteem.

Munch founder Anna Bordignon says, "Our main focus is on our social impacts.

"The three areas we focus on are providing work to people in need, creating environmentally-friendly products, and offering healthy food ideas for children.

The employment model will be rolled out in Christchurch later this year, with Munch planning to employ another 10 mothers in the coming months.

"Munch is an extension of values that I truly believe in," Bordignon says.

The company produces over 3000 organic beeswax wraps a week sold both domestically and internationally.

Its key export markets are US, Australia, Canada, UK and Germany.

Demand for Munch's reusable food wraps has increased significantly with the introduction of a subscription-based service and because of growth in export demand.

"We commenced the subscription model last month with great uptake as we not only offer the wraps but also two very useful ebooks," says Bordignon.

"We also provide our organic fires starters which we make from the offcuts of our wraps.

"Our whole manufacturing process is waste-free.

This increase in demand has enabled Munch to create new part-time roles in South Auckland.

"Our dream is to have pockets of workers all over the country making our award-winning food wraps and then to sell them all over the world," she adds.
