Xero has won Canstar's 2026 Most Satisfied Customers Award for Small Business Accounting Software in New Zealand, marking its eighth consecutive year receiving the award.

The result was based on feedback from small business customers. According to Xero, users rated it highest in the market for ease of integration, reporting, ease of use, and functionality.

The award strengthens Xero's position in the New Zealand small business software market as accounting platforms compete on automation, bank connections, third-party app integrations, and tools that reduce manual administrative work. Customer satisfaction rankings are closely watched in a sector where retention and referrals are key drivers of growth.

Xero linked the result to areas where it has continued to develop its product, including automation tools, benchmarking functions, and open banking services for small businesses in New Zealand.

Product updates

Among the features it highlighted was Smart Document Capture, now in beta, which reads bills, receipts, and invoices after they are uploaded, forwarded, or photographed, then turns them into a transaction for review. It also pointed to Auto Bank Reconciliation, also in beta, which matches transactions to bank feeds as they arrive instead of leaving users to reconcile them later.

Xero said Auto Bank Reconciliation is expected to handle more complex scenarios, including splitting a single payment across sales and fees. Another feature, Industry Benchmarks in Xero Analytics, compares a business's figures with those of other companies in the same sector.

For eligible customers in New Zealand, Xero is also testing Pay by Bank, a beta service that uses Akahu's open banking network. The tool lets customers pay an invoice from within their banking app, with the payment then matched and reconciled automatically.

The company has framed these developments around what it calls Accountable Intelligence, its term for using artificial intelligence and automation for routine tasks while keeping decision-making with the user. That position reflects a broader trend across business software providers, which are under pressure to show AI tools can save time without removing oversight from accountants and small business owners.

Customer feedback

Xero included customer comments pointing to ease of use, bank integration, invoicing, and reporting as the main reasons for its rating. Several also referred to how the software supports links between small businesses and their accountants.

One customer said: "Very intuitive layout, seamless bank integration, and excellent invoicing features." Another said: "Very easy to use, intuitive, has all the features you want."

Other responses focused on day-to-day finance management and visibility over cash flow. One customer said: "Xero is easy to use day to day. Bank feeds payroll and reporting work well. It gives a clear view of cash flow."

NZ market

Xero also published a message from its New Zealand leadership alongside the award: "This is why this award means so much. Canstar's 2026 Most Satisfied Customers Award for Small Business Accounting Software isn't decided by a panel - it's voted for by the small business owners actually running things on Xero. For the eighth year running, you've named us your top choice. It's a vote of confidence we don't take for granted, from the people who know best what it takes to run a business in Aotearoa New Zealand - you, and the advisors that back you."

Xero said the survey findings matched the product areas customers value most, particularly integration and reporting. Those functions have become central to software buying decisions as small firms seek to bring banking, payments, invoicing, and compliance tasks into fewer systems.

New Zealand remains an important market for Xero, which was founded in Wellington and built much of its early growth on local small business adoption before expanding overseas. The latest Canstar result suggests it continues to enjoy strong customer support in its home market even as software vendors add more automation and AI-based features to their products.

In comments accompanying the announcement, Xero said it intends to keep improving the platform in the areas customers highlighted. "Whether these features are live today or being built right now, every single innovation comes back to one simple question before released: does this genuinely make life easier for small business owners and their advisors?" it said.
