Portchain expands digital solutions for Oceania ports

Thu, 31st Oct 2024

Portchain has announced the expansion of its digital solutions across Oceania to enhance efficiency, predictability, and sustainability in container shipping.

The Danish company is broadening its reach with berth planning and alignment digital solutions already implemented in several major terminals in the region. Portchain's digital platforms aim to increase operational efficiency and contribute to environmental sustainability in the container shipping industry. Portchain seeks to optimise resource allocation, minimise idle time, and enhance berth utilisation by facilitating real-time data sharing and collaboration.

Over 130 container terminals worldwide, including key ones in Oceania, already leverage Portchain's solutions. These solutions help terminals and carriers effectively align their operations, reducing disruptions and promoting sustainable outcomes. The company reports that the Portchain Network has been instrumental in preventing over 194,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions in the past year, indicative of the potential for significant environmental benefits alongside economic gains.

Niels Kristiansen, CEO & Co-Founder, Anders Olivarius, CIO & Co-Founder, and Thor Thorup, CCO & Co-Founder of Portchain, stated, "As Founders of Portchain, we are immensely humbled and proud to count on over 130 container terminals in the Portchain Network, representing just over 25% of the world's global container capacity. We will continue to work tirelessly to create value for the terminal and carrier network, and we want to thank every single terminal for trusting Portchain to digitise their berth alignment process."

"Together, we are reshaping the future of port operations and paving the way for enhanced efficiency, transparency, and sustainability. As we celebrate this milestone, we remain dedicated to driving continued growth and empowering even more terminals to optimise their operations with Portchain."

The CO2 savings reported by Portchain equate to removing over 46,000 gasoline-powered cars from the road for a year or planting 3.2 million trees and growing them for ten years. This underscores Portchain's commitment to sustainability in the shipping industry by balancing environmental responsibility and operational efficiency.

Andres Olivarius, Co-Founder and CIO of Portchain, emphasised the importance of this balance, "True sustainability in the shipping industry is about achieving a balance where environmental responsibility and operational efficiency go hand in hand. At Portchain, we are proving that it is possible to significantly reduce CO2 emissions without sacrificing the efficiency of carrier and terminal operations. This milestone highlights our commitment to the Portchain Network, showing that innovative technology can drive both environmental and operational excellence."

Portchain's solutions include supporting the industry's shift toward Just-In-Time (JIT) port calls, enabling them on a global scale. The platform provides real-time insights that aid in more timely and informed speed adjustments during voyages, thus helping carriers reduce fuel consumption and emissions while maintaining operational efficiency. The approach offers a cost-effective and immediate way to reduce global emissions without the need for vessel retrofitting or alternative fuel types.

The expansion in Oceania further indicates Portchain's dedication to promoting collaboration and transparency within the global container shipping industry. As more terminals and shipping lines in the region embrace digital solutions, Oceania stands to gain from enhanced operational efficiency and a more sustainable future.
