Proofpoint unveils AI-first Nuclei archiving suite

Wed, 4th Mar 2026

Proofpoint has launched Nuclei Discovery & Archive Suite, a cloud-based digital communications governance and archiving product aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. The suite combines archiving, communications intelligence and optional supervision features in a single platform.

Smaller organisations face rising demands to retain and review communications as employees spread work across email, collaboration apps, mobile messaging and social platforms. Compliance obligations and e-discovery requests are also becoming harder to manage for teams with limited time and specialist staff.

Figures cited from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce highlight the scale of the issue for US businesses. More than half of small businesses said navigating regulatory compliance requirements hurt their growth, while 47% said they spent too much time on compliance tasks.

Australian policymakers have also pointed to the cost of mistakes for smaller firms. The Australian Taxation Office has linked part of Australia's AUD $27.2 billion small business income tax gap to errors, underscoring the operational impact of compliance complexity for lean teams.

Proofpoint positioned Nuclei as an alternative to older archiving products still used by many organisations. "Organisations are frustrated by legacy archiving tools that are complex, expensive, and slow to deliver value," said Harry Labana, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Proofpoint's Digital Communications Governance business unit. "The Nuclei Suite delivers an AI-first, simple-to-deploy solution that unifies archiving and communications intelligence, helping SMBs quickly identify risk, strengthen compliance and reduce operational overhead."

Deployment and admin

The suite uses a single administrative interface for user management, policy settings, ingestion and reporting. Proofpoint said administrators can deploy the service and start capturing data within minutes with minimal setup.

Updates are included as part of the service, with Proofpoint managing changes in collaboration with customers. The product also supports ingestion of legacy data, and subscriptions can scale to cover more users, channels or archive storage.

Archive features

Nuclei includes search and retrieval tools for archived content, along with litigation hold functions designed to preserve information against deletion. It also includes export tools, plus reconciliation and reporting features to track ingestion status and archive health.

Proofpoint said exports do not incur additional fees, framing the policy as a response to customer complaints about unexpected costs during investigations and legal discovery.

Supervision option

The suite includes an optional supervision feature that Proofpoint described as "lexicon-free". The company said traditional supervision products often rely on keyword lists and manual tuning, while its approach uses AI-driven communications intelligence to surface conduct, compliance and insider risk signals across digital channels.

Proofpoint also said the product integrates with Proofpoint Insider Threat Management to provide clearer visibility into communications risk within a broader oversight workflow.

Licensing model

Pricing uses a per-user, per-connection model and supports capturing content from more than 80 digital communications channels, Proofpoint said. It highlighted Microsoft 365 as a common environment for smaller firms, adding that a single connection can cover Exchange email, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Viva Engage and Copilot.

Each subscription includes 10GB of pooled archive storage per user and connection, with additional storage available as requirements increase.

Market context

Digital communications governance and archiving has grown in prominence as regulators and litigators broaden expectations around retention, searchability and audit trails. Collaboration platforms and workplace messaging have expanded the number of channels that compliance teams must monitor. AI assistants embedded in productivity suites have also introduced new categories of generated content and new questions about recordkeeping.

Proofpoint also pointed to recent third-party recognition. It said Gartner named the company a Leader for the second consecutive time in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Communications Governance and Archiving Solutions, based on an assessment of 14 vendors.

Nuclei now joins Proofpoint's broader portfolio spanning email security, data loss prevention and insider risk products. Labana said frustration with complex tools was a key driver of the suite's design, positioning it as a faster-start option for lean teams facing growing compliance and investigation workloads.
