Thread has launched a centralised marketing system of record for enterprise marketing teams. The Auckland startup already has backing from DB Breweries, FreshChoice, ANZCO Foods and Metlifecare.

Founded by Troy Fuller and Phil Newman, the company is entering the market with a product that stores campaign briefs, media plans, creative assets and performance reports in one place. It uses a custom artificial intelligence layer that lets users query that material through a conversational interface.

The pitch addresses a familiar problem in corporate marketing departments, where campaign information is often scattered across slide decks, spreadsheets, shared drives and agency files. That can leave teams without a clear record of what has been done before, particularly when staff move on or agency relationships change.

Thread is positioning itself as a single source of truth for brand teams, combining performance data with the strategic context behind past decisions. The startup says this helps retain institutional knowledge from completed campaigns rather than losing it once reporting cycles end.

Fuller and Newman come from agency and software backgrounds. They say the product began as an internal tool before being developed into a commercial platform after discussions with brand-side marketing leaders.

Data structure

A central part of the product is its underlying data model. Rather than asking a general-purpose AI system to search unstructured company files, Thread queries verified, structured marketing data points, which the founders argue reduces the risk of inaccurate answers.

That focus reflects a broader challenge for companies adopting AI tools in business functions that depend on historical records and precise reporting. In marketing, errors in interpreting campaign results or media activity can affect budgets, planning, and relationships with agencies and suppliers.

"Across agencies in New Zealand, Australia, and London, the pattern is identical," said Troy Fuller, co-founder of Thread. "Campaigns go into market, results come back, and the insight evaporates. We built Thread so marketers can ask what worked six months ago and get immediate answers drawn from everything the business has ever run."

He also set out the company's case for using structured data as the base for AI queries. "AI is a probability engine, and if you plug it into an unorganised server, it will confidently give you the wrong answer," Fuller said. "It only takes one incorrect insight for a team to lose trust. A structured framework from which AI extracts precise data points is essential for real marketing intelligence."

Early customers

The presence of several established companies at launch gives the startup early commercial credibility in a crowded marketing technology market. DB Breweries, FreshChoice, ANZCO Foods and Metlifecare were identified as early backers, suggesting the platform has been shaped with input from larger enterprise users rather than small businesses.

That matters in a segment where integration into existing workflows often determines whether software is adopted beyond a pilot phase. Marketing teams typically use a patchwork of tools for planning, media buying, creative approval, analytics and reporting, which can make any new system difficult to introduce unless it fits current documentation and processes.

Thread says onboarding can be completed within 24 hours by ingesting and mapping legacy campaign documents into the platform. That allows clients to bring in existing briefs and media schedules without rebuilding them from scratch.

"What began as a simple internal tool rapidly snowballed once we validated the core problem with brand leaders. The heavy technical work behind the scenes makes onboarding seamless, allowing clients to integrate existing media schedules and briefs within 24 hours," said Phil Newman, co-founder of Thread.

Expansion plans

The startup has been bootstrapped so far and is now opening a seed capital raise as it looks to expand across New Zealand and Australia. The next phase will test whether it can turn early support from local brands into broader adoption in the Australasian martech market.

Its launch comes as companies in the region scrutinise where AI can deliver practical returns in back-office and commercial functions. While many tools promise automation or insight generation, buyers have become more focused on data quality, implementation time and whether software can preserve knowledge that would otherwise disappear into internal systems.

For Thread, the argument is less about replacing existing marketing applications than creating a permanent record around them. The founders argue that campaign intelligence has long been treated as disposable, even though it is repeatedly referenced when teams decide where to spend the next budget.

Now seeking outside funding, the company is pushing further into the trans-Tasman market.
