Contented raises AUD $4.1m to fuel UK and US push
Christchurch-based AI startup Contented has raised AUD $4.1 million in seed funding as it accelerates international expansion and hires across product, sales and customer support.
The oversubscribed round was led by Altered Capital, with participation from Australia's Shearwater Capital, K1W1, Icehouse Ventures, Aspire NZ Seed Fund, Phase One Ventures and Exhort Ventures.
The company plans to use the capital to enter new markets, with a focus on the UK and the US. It also intends to broaden its product offering across business functions and add integrations with widely used workplace software.
Co-founders Lucy Pink and Hannah Hardy-Jones started Contented after working on earlier ventures. Pink previously founded ethical fashion startup Onyou and is a self-taught developer. Hardy-Jones founded The Kite Program, a mental health app.
Meeting Output
Contented's platform records conversations in meetings and calls, including in-person discussions. It converts recordings into structured documents and business insights, using templates tailored to different use cases.
The product is positioned to help teams capture meeting decisions and actions and produce consistent documentation without a separate manual write-up process.
Pink said organisations of different sizes use the platform. "We work with businesses of all sizes - from growing SMEs through to some of New Zealand's biggest organisations," she said.
Customers cited by the company include Synlait, Craigs Investment Partners, Alliance Group, Awanui Group, Christchurch Airport, and Apollo Projects, as well as smaller businesses in several countries.
Alliance Group uses the product to record meetings across its organisation, according to Contented. Outputs can include meeting minutes and health and safety reports.
Revenue Growth
Contented said it has grown from a small customer base to more than 200 customers worldwide. Over the past year, it reported NZD $1.4 million in annual recurring revenue, achieved without external funding.
Altered Capital's Finn Templeton described the company's traction as unusually fast in the local market. "Contented's growth trajectory is remarkable and among the fastest we've seen in New Zealand," he said.
Templeton also highlighted the product's ability to turn spoken discussions into reusable material. "Contented generates structured insight and business value out of conversations, effectively turning talk into scalable intellectual assets and unlocking a previously unused source of value. We're delighted to partner with Hannah and Lucy to help fuel Contented's growth," he said.
Sector Focus
Contented is seeing particularly strong uptake in financial services, where documentation requirements and compliance processes can add time to client-facing work. The company says it can produce multiple artefacts from a single discussion, such as advice documents and summary tables.
Hardy-Jones said the new funding will help expand the product and reach more customers in new regions. "We've had really strong interest from a great range of investors and this funding is going to allow us to deepen our feature set, expand our customer base, and push hard into new territories like the UK and US," she said.
Alongside market expansion, the company plans to add templates for HR and recruitment. It will also work on integrations with CRM systems and Microsoft Office, alongside further development of its AI features.
Hiring Plans
Contented plans to increase headcount from five to about 15 within the next two months, hiring across development, go-to-market roles and customer success.
The startup is part of a growing group of New Zealand companies building tools around speech-to-text and workplace automation. Its premise is that spoken conversations contain information that organisations often fail to capture consistently.
Pink said the company sees business conversations as a resource that can be used more effectively: "We believe conversations are the most underutilised resource in business. We're here to change that."
Product development and overseas expansion are expected to coincide with the planned staffing increase as Contented targets growth in the UK and US.
