Microlise SmartGateway 14 gains TCA type-approval in Australia

Mon, 22nd Sep 2025

Microlise APAC has received type-approval from Transport Certification Australia (TCA) for its flagship telematics device, joining 14 other approved telematics suppliers in Australia and New Zealand.

The accreditation was granted to Microlise's SmartGateway 14 telematics device after undergoing the TCA's independent assessment process. TCA is the responsible government-appointed body for administering the National Telematics Framework, and its evaluation measures whether telematics systems meet the performance needs of governments, regulators, industry stakeholders and end-users.

To achieve type-approval, providers must put forward their hardware for review, demonstrate compliance with the performance requirements, and satisfy an independent evaluation conducted by TCA. The type-approval is designed to ensure that the devices meet strict specifications relating to accuracy, reliability, integrity and security.

Microlise is now among a select group of 15 organisations recognised in both Australia and New Zealand for having devices that have undergone this assessment, from a marketplace reportedly offering products from over 100 telematics providers.

Assessment and benefits

Type-approval is considered by industry participants as an important factor for selecting telematics equipment because it signals independent verification of product performance. Transport operators are increasingly relying on telematics to support business operations, compliance obligations, safety outcomes and management of fleets. Type-approval is intended to give transport organisations confidence when choosing technology suppliers, as it streamlines procurement and underpins trust.

Microlise indicated it is actively pursuing TCA certification so that its type-approved devices can be deployed in productivity and safety schemes, particularly under the Road Infrastructure Management (RIM) and Telematics Monitoring Application (TMA), as well as Smart On-Board Mass (OBM) systems.

Securing type-approval is seen as a significant milestone in Microlise's pathway towards broader certification, reflecting its aim to enhance data integrity, device reliability, and compatibility with various industry and government telematics programmes.

Industry response

During Microlise's executive roadshow, formal recognition of the achievement was made by Gavin Hill, General Manager of Strategic Engagement and Performance at Austroads. The approval was marked as a notable step for the supplier, showing alignment with sector expectations for data quality and safety standards.

Only 14 other providers have met the rigorous standards required for TCA to grant type-approval. Type-approval signals Microlise is serious about supporting operators with technology they can trust.

Luke Olsen, Managing Director at Microlise APAC, described the type-approval as a way of ensuring transport operators that the company's hardware is validated for performance and security to the highest standard.

We're incredibly proud to achieve TCA type-approval. With more than 100 providers of telematics being offered in the crowded Australian and New Zealand market, this recognition helps transport operators make informed choices and reinforces our commitment to supporting safer and more efficient transport across Australia and New Zealand.

Technical and compliance implications

The approval underscores the technical and compliance requirements facing telematics suppliers in the region. To be eligible for TCA type-approval, telematics devices are subjected to comprehensive testing based on specifications reflecting the input of government agencies and other stakeholders. This includes evaluation for accuracy of data capture, ability to securely store and transmit information, and resilience against tampering or fault.

Microlise joins a shortlist of approved suppliers that transport organisations can look to for devices that have been independently assessed, potentially reducing the risk profile for operators participating in mandatory and voluntary government schemes related to road use, vehicle mass compliance, and infrastructure maintenance.

Transport Certification Australia operates as part of Austroads and is tasked with ensuring that telematics and vehicle-based technologies are effectively leveraged for improved ways of collecting and analysing transport data across Australia and New Zealand.

The type-approval for Microlise's SmartGateway 14 device will enable its participation in a range of compliance and management programmes, and reflects ongoing industry efforts to improve technology trust and regulatory alignment in transport telematics.
